Travel
Savonlinna can be reached
by air from Helsinki.
The timetables and prices of
the summer flights are now available There
are morning and an evening flights by Flybe
from July 2 onward. Due to Opera Festival there will be high
number of travellers, so , it is wise to book a flight as soon
as possible.
The flight time is about 1 hour. The price of
the flight depends on the time of booking and connected
flights. There are shuttle and taxi connections
available from the airport to the town centre. The travel time
is about 20 minutes
and the price varies between €14 and €26. Group prices can be a
bit lower, if you order the transportation beforehand.
A
large taxi will fetch the participants arriving on Monday
morning flight at 9.40 o'clock, drive to the hotel, where you
can leave you luggage and bring you to Summer School venue. The
organisers will pay the taxi.
Savonlinna can also be
reached by train or
by bus from Helsinki. The travel time is 4 –
5 hours. There is one change of the trains at Parikkala. The current price of a one-way ticket in train is about €56,93
yet, discounts are available for early bookers, seniors
and youth. At the moment VR gives for early special offer: two
person with one ticket (€28.50/person). There are 5
trains between Savonlinna and Helsinki from early morning to late evening,
with one exception: on Sundays there is not early train
(departure 5.40 o'clock). The end station is Savonlinna
when you book your ticket, and you step off the train at
Savonlinna kauppatori.
If you choose bus -
recommended, if you want to get a wider picture of
Finland - there will be 10, or even more connections around
o'clock. It is good to know that depending on the route, the
journey takes 4h 50min - 7h35min. The ticket prices are quite
the same as in trains and there are price options too. The
busses are clean and air-conditioned, and the roads are in good
shape.
There is also the option
to order a taxi shuttle from Savonlinna to fetch a group of 9 -
10 persons. For example, from Helsinki to Savonlinna the
charge is about 450 - 500€ per the whole group.
The staff, both on
railroad and in busses usually know English.
